Cultural beliefs about the existence of ghosts vary widely across different societies and traditions. Ghosts are understood as the spirits of the deceased people who still linger in the earthly realm for some reason.

They believe that these spirits of humans remain because of their unfinished business or because they can’t move on to the afterlife. Many cultures also have their own stories of hauntings, crisis apparitions, and spirits of dead people returning to communicate with the living.
But the Bible has a different perspective on spirits and the afterlife. In Biblical teachings, human souls aren’t to remain here on Earth after death. According to Hebrews 9:27, we face judgment after we die. Our souls are designed either for Heaven or Hell. There’s no basis for our spirits to linger in the physical world after dying to interact with the living.

However, the Bible acknowledges that there are spiritual beings, like holy angels and demons. These beings can influence the physical world. They are different from the spirits of deceased humans and they serve a certain role in the Biblical narrative.
Some interpretations suggest that what we may perceive as ghosts could be manifestations of angels and demons. This is particularly true of demonic entities that attempt to deceive or frighten the living.
Cultural beliefs about ghosts include the idea of a spirit world that’s interwoven with our own. But the Bible does present a distinction between the physical world and the spiritual realm. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 warns us against communicating with the dead or even engaging with supernatural entities.
What are the References To Spirits in the Old Testament?
When the first king of Israel was in desperate circumstances as he faced an impending battle with the Philistines, he sought out a medium in Endor. He asked the medium to summon the spirit of the prophet Samuel
The medium agreed and the spirit of Samuel appeared. But Samuel condemned King Saul and reminded him that God would judge him for his disobedience. He also told Saul of his impending defeat and death.
Dead Person’s Spirit Communicating with the Living
That was the story of the Witch of Endor. It does raise the question about the nature of the spirit world and the perspective of the Bible about ghosts. The passage does describe the spirit of Samuel appearing suggests that it’s possible for a dead person’s spirit to communicate with the living.
However, Biblical scholars debate the nature of the said event. Some said that God allowed it to occur to convey His message to Saul. Others argue that the spirit in the passage could have been a demonic apparition that only meant to deceive Saul.
Ghosts Don’t Align with God’s Purpose for Us
The said story answers the question “What does the bible say about ghosts.” It also reminds us that if indeed a spirit would appear, it’s not something that aligns with God’s purpose for us. Rather, it portrays the actions of Saul as a grave transgression against God. It also highlights how desperate Saul was about the impending battle he was about to face.

It clearly condemns the practice of consulting a medium and those who claim to communicate with the dead. In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, God forbids the Israelites from engaging in practices, like sorcery, divination, or speaking to the dead. He considered such practices as detestable.
Instead of seeking advice from mediums, Leviticus 19:31 recommends trusting in God’s guidance alone.
Seeking a Medium Violates God’s Commands
When Saul sought out the medium at Endor, he violated God’s commands. The story serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of not trusting God. God’s people must seek guidance and comfort from Him and not rely on forbidden supernatural practices.
Christ Jesus Walks on Water – Mistaken for a Ghost
During a storm on the Sea of Galilee, God’s disciples struggled in their boat. His disciples were terrified when they saw Jesus walking on water toward them. They thought and believed He was a ghost.
The initial reaction to Jesus walking on the water only revealed the disciples’ fear and confusion. They assumed Jesus was a ghost after seeing Him moving across the turbulent waves at night. It only reflected their uncertainty about what they were witnessing.
The Idea of Ghosts Isn’t New
Their fear does indicate that the idea of ghosts was not new to them. They seemed to believe that spirits could manifest in visible forms. This is particularly true in moments of fear or uncertainty.
The story provides insight into how the disciples and the people of their time might have understood the supernatural. How they reacted only suggests that they were aware and probably believed that spirits do exist, even though the idea isn’t central to Jewish theology. That moment captured their struggle to reconcile their understanding of the physical world with what they believed was a supernatural event.
Revelation of the Divine Power of Jesus
However, the story shifts focus from the idea of ghosts to the revelation of the divine power of Jesus. When Jesus speaks to them, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (Matthew 14:27), He dispels their fear and automatically reveals His identity. The shift emphasizes a key message that God’s presence offers reassurance and authority over our fear and the unknown.
The story also highlights how important it is for us to turn to God in moments of fear, instead of being preoccupied with supernatural explanations. For us Christians, the story is a reminder that we have to place our trust in Jesus, who always calms the storm and brings clarity even in moments of confusion or fear regarding the spiritual world.
Holy Spirit and Ghosts – Are They the Same?
They’re not the same. The Holy Ghost is different from other spiritual entities. It’s part of the Trinity, i.e. the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. It represents God’s presence, guidance, and power in the lives of believers. It’s depicted as a source of comfort, wisdom, and empowerment.
The Bible also speaks of evil spirits. They are demons or unclean spirits that are seen as rebellious against God. These spirits aim to deceive or torment individuals. Unlike the Holy Spirit, these evil spirits seek to disrupt and destroy the spiritual well-being of God’s people.
The Apostle Paul warns that believers do “struggle not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).
Spiritual Forces are Real
The Bible makes it clear that spiritual forces are real. However, believers must seek the guidance and presence of the Holy Spirit and avoid any interaction with other spiritual entities that are often demonic deception and dangerous.
Exorcism and Encounters with Evil Spirits
The New Testament contains various accounts about Jesus and His disciples encountering evil spirits. These accounts provide further insight into the biblical understanding of the spiritual realm. These examples only demonstrate that evil spirits are real. They can possess individuals.
In Mark 5:1-20, Jesus encounters a man possessed by a legion of demons in Gerasene. The demons recognize the authority of Jesus. They plead not to be sent away but to enter a herd of pigs.
He did allow it. The pigs rush into a lake and drown. It only illustrates the power of Jesus over evil spirits and the fear these spirits have of Him. Unlike the Holy Spirits, evil spirits only want chaos and destruction.
Another account that talks about evil spirits is written in Mark 9:14-29. In the passage, a father brought his son to Jesus. The son suffered from seizures and convulsions because of an unclean spirit. Jesus’ disciples were unable to cast out the demon. But Jesus rebuked it. He commanded it to leave and never return. The spirit did obey and the boy was healed.
The story only highlights the challenges that believers can face when dealing with spiritual entities and emphasizes the necessity of prayer and faith to overcome them.
Malevolent Beings

They also demonstrate that even the most troubling encounter with evil spirits can be easily overcome by praying and trusting God alone.
The Bible provides guidance on how we should handle fear, especially when we face the unknown or supernatural. Scripture emphasizes the importance of having faith and trust in God’s protection, instead of engaging with spirit beings or seeking answers through supernatural events.
Remember 2 Timothy 1:7? It states “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” It reassures us that fear doesn’t come from God. Rather, God provides strength, love, and a sound mind to face challenges. And yes, including fears about the spiritual realm.
Rely on God’s Presence
The said message echoed throughout the Bible in other passages that encourage us to rely on God’s presence in times of great distress.
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”Psalm 23:4 serves as a reminder that God’s presence is our source of comfort and protection, even in the darkest and most frightening situations.
We’re encouraged to draw on our faith as a means of overcoming anxiety and fear. We must trust that God is in control of all realms – both physical and spiritual.
The Spirits and The Ghosts
