According to Genesis 9:18, Ham was the youngest son of Noah and the father of Canaan. The names of Ham’s brothers were Japheth and Shem. After the great flood destroyed the earth, Ham and his relatives survived.
In Genesis 6, the Bible describes Ham’s father, Noah, as a righteous man who was blameless among the people of his time.
As a result of the sinful and corrupt nature of people during that period, the Lord decided to destroy the human race with a flood. But Noah found favor in the sight of God because he walked faithfully with God.
To save Noah and his family from the impending destruction of the earth, the Lord instructed him to build an ark. Then, the Lord told him to go into the ark with his family and two of every kind of bird and animal.
He was also instructed to take some food with him into the ark for his family and the animals that would be with them.
Noah obeyed God’s instructions, and he stayed in the ark with his family and animals when the rain started. The rain fell for forty days and forty nights, killing every living creature on the earth. But Noah, with every human and animal in the ark, survived.
Afterwards, the waters on land went down after one hundred and fifty days and gradually continued to dry up. When the water on earth was totally dry, Noah, with his wife and his sons and their wives, came out of the ark.
Later, the animals that went with them into the ark came out as well. Noah’s son Ham was among the people who came out of the ark with him.
Genesis 9:18-29 gives a brief account of Ham’s story and why his son Canaan was cursed. Being a man of the soil, Noah planted a vineyard after the flood situation was over.
One day, he drank some of the wine the vineyard produced and became drunk. Because Noah was drunk, he laid naked in the tent.
When Ham went into the tent, he saw the nakedness of his father and went to inform his older brothers from outside the tent.
Realizing what had happened, Shem and Japheth walked backward into the tent with a garment across their shoulders, and they used it to cover their father’s nakedness.
The two brothers were careful not to see the nakedness of their father by turning their faces away from him.
When Noah awoke from his drunken stupor and became aware of Ham’s actions, he cursed the son of Ham, Canaan, saying,
“Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.” Then, Noah blessed his other sons, Shem and Japheth, for their wise behaviors.
In addition to this short story about Ham, the Bible tells us, in the table of nations (Genesis 10), that he was also the father of Cush, Egypt, and Put.
Except for the mention of Ham’s descendants (Genesis 10:6-20), there are no further details about him.
The Bible did not specify why Noah laid a curse on Ham’s son Canaan instead of Ham himself. However, there are few speculations about the reason for this occurrence.
Modern scholars assume that Canaan must have been involved in the sin of Ham in one way or the other.

From the biblical narratives of Noah from Genesis 6, there weren’t any major fights or problems in his family. But the foundation of the problem in Noah’s family can be traced to when he became intoxicated with wine.
Noah must have had too much wine to drink to the extent that he wasn’t conscious of his nakedness. There’s a possibility that if he hadn’t gotten drunk, the issue of Canaan’s curse wouldn’t have taken place at all.

Ham wouldn’t have incurred a curse on his son Canaan and his descendants if he had covered Noah’s nakedness. All he had to do was to protect his father’s dignity, even without calling his brother’s attention.
Ham did not only sin against his father by being disrespectful towards him, but he also sinned against God.
Many verses of the scriptures command us to honor our parents. Among such verses is Exodus 20:12, from the Ten Commandments, which states,
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.” The message of this verse of the Bible is straightforward: if you want to live long, honor your parents.
Understandably, we can’t always agree with our parents over certain issues all the time. Nevertheless, we must treat them with utmost respect and kindness because the word of God says so.
Children who don’t respect their parents always end up causing problems for themselves and others.
Everything we do has its reward, whether good or bad. The Bible tells us in Galatians 6:7 that
“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.”
Noah cursed Canaan because of the foolish deeds of his father, Ham. On the contrary, he blessed Shem and Japheth because they behaved wisely and honorably.
