Abraham displayed perfect obedience to God, even when he didn’t see the bigger picture yet. He believed in God’s promises, and this prompted him to continually obey His divine instructions.
When God told Abraham to leave his father’s house for a place where He would show him (Genesis 12:1), the father of faith did not argue or complain; he simply obeyed because of his faith in the Almighty.
Another exceptional act of obedience that Abraham showed was when God asked him to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, to him. Meanwhile, Abraham and his wife Sarah gave birth to Isaac at an old age after several years of barrenness. Besides, God told Abraham that Isaac is the son of promise, through whom He would make him a great nation. So how would sacrificing this same son make this promise come to pass in his life?
Still, Abraham believed that everything belongs to God and nothing was too precious to sacrifice to him. Moreover, he knew that God is faithful to His promises, and even if he sacrificed Isaac, the Lord can provide another son for him. Despite being a difficult decision, Abraham prepared to sacrifice his only son to God.
Even when Isaac asked where the lamb for the sacrifice was, since the fire and wood were available, Genesis 22:8 tells us that “Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. And God indeed provided a ram in the place of Isaac that Abraham eventually sacrificed to Him.
As believers, nothing should be too big for us to sacrifice to God. He knows all things and would always come through for us when we think there’s no hope.
The story of Noah is one of the most popular stories in the Bible because of its unusual nature. Noah was a righteous man during his time, despite being among wicked people (Genesis 6). So when God decided to destroy the earth with a flood, he and his household obtained favor. However, God asked Noah to build an ark with specific instructions of how it should be, including the length, height, and width.
Noah could have disobeyed God’s instructions because the mass destruction was still in 120 years time. Besides, it had never rained before on earth, so the flood seemed like it would never happen. But Noah believed that God would never lie, so he started working on the ark even when people thought he had lost his mind.
As Noah was building the ark, he was informing everyone that it was going to rain and the ark was available for safety. When the flood began, every human being and animal in the ark were saved while those who were outside perished.
If you’re a genuine child of God, you don’t need to rationalize God’s instructions before you obey them. Noah could have waited for the drizzle of rain before building the ark, but he didn’t because he believed in God.
His act of obedience is a perfect expression of unwavering faith in God, according to Hebrews 11:1, which says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” After the flood stopped, not only did Noah save himself, but he also saved his entire family.
Whenever anyone mentions the “parting of the Red Sea” story, Moses will come to mind because he was the hero in this iconic story. But this won’t have been possible assuming he was disobedient.
God had to capture Moses’ attention in a strange way by showcasing His power through the burning bush experience in Exodus 3:1-4. Despite his initial hesitation and excuses, he later obeyed the Lord’s command and did great things.
Moses’ first assignment was to rescue the Israelites from the hand of Pharaoh, who held them captive, and lead them to the promised land. By obeying God’s divine leading and direction, he was able to confront Pharaoh and liberate the Israelites from the hand of their slave masters. Because of his humility and continuous obedience to God’s law, Moses received the ten commandments on Mount Sinai.
Further, he became an intermediary between God and the Israelites to the extent that God revealed His ways to him (Psalm 103:7). Moses’ close relationship with God was as a result of his unwavering obedience, meekness, and total submission to God’s authority. Additionally, Moses was courageous enough to confront Pharaoh because he knew that greater is He who is in him than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4).
Among the numerous examples of individuals who practiced complete obedience to the word of God and submitted to His will is Mary, the mother of Jesus. Luke 1:26-38 tells the story of how the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her she would conceive and give birth to a son who should be called Jesus. She was destined to carry the savior of the world in her womb, despite being a virgin who was engaged to be married.
God knew the coming of the Christ Jesus into earth would come at a great cost, and Mary can handle the spiritual assignment perfectly. When the angel delivered God’s message to Mary, she didn’t argue, even though she was troubled. She simply said, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled (Luke 1:38). This statement is an expression of submission to God’s will and His divine purpose for her life.
God wouldn’t have given Mary this crucial role if He didn’t find her worthy. She was ready to accept the shame and judgment that comes with being pregnant before marriage. All Mary had in mind was to obey God and please Him, no matter the consequences.
Sometimes, obedience to God’s words would disrupt our plans and rearrange the course of our lives. We must be ready to accept whatever comes our way because God is faithful, and He won’t give us what we can’t handle. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
Simon Peter was among the three disciples who were closest to Jesus while He was on earth because of his various acts of obedience. Initially, he was just a regular fisherman who didn’t know he would play a major part in Jesus’ ministry.
In Luke 5:1-11, the Bible tells us that the Lake of Genesaret was full of people who wanted to listen to Jesus’ teachings. So Jesus had to sit in a boat belonging to Simon Peter, where he taught the people comfortably.
When the teachings ended, Jesus asked Simon Peter to launch his net into the waters for a catch. Peter answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets” (Luke 5:5). The statement “Because you say so” is proof of Peter’s trust in Jesus’ ability to help him. And he reaped the reward of obedience by catching a large number of fish that filled their boats to the brim.
From that day, Peter’s life changed because he followed Jesus and contributed greatly to His ministry to become a fisher of men.Peter attracted Jesus by first releasing his boat to Him for use. One important lesson here is that God doesn’t owe those who contribute to the progress of His kingdom. We also learn that one simple act of obedience can transform both our physical and spiritual lives. Similarly, following God’s instruction can make several fruitless efforts fruitful within a twinkle of an eye.
6. Daniel’s Obedience
Daniel’s story is a source of motivation to believers who genuinely want to grow in their spiritual journey. While Daniel was taken captive at a young age to a strange land, he didn’t allow it to affect his devotion, trust, and faith in God.
His first expression of obedience was when he refused to eat the rich food offered to him in the palace because it was against God’s law. God blessed Daniel by making him strong and healthy, even though he was eating just vegetables and water (Daniel 1).
Another remarkable display of Daniel’s obedience was when he refused to follow King Darius’ decree of praying to another God except him (Daniel 6). Daniel rose to a high political rank in a foreign land because of his diligence, honesty, and wisdom, resulting from obedience to God. So the other government officials were jealous of him and decided to bring him down.
Since these unbelievers couldn’t find any shady behavior in Daniel, they decided to use his belief in God against him. After convincing King Darius, he passed a decree that anyone who worshipped any other god or human except him would be thrown in the lion’s den as punishment.
Although this decree lasted for 30 days, giving Daniel the opportunity to change his mind, he didn’t stop praying to and worshipping God. As a result of this, they threw him into the lion’s den in spite of the king’s earnest desire to keep him safe. Eventually, God came through for Daniel by shutting the mouths of lions, and they couldn’t harm him.
Daniel’s delivery from the lion’s den is a confirmation of God’s word in Psalm 34:20.
7. Jesus Christ’s Obedience
Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the ultimate example of obedience in the Bible. He submitted to God’s will even to the point of death on the cross and received the full reward of obedience. Jesus displayed humility by coming to earth in the form of a human to experience suffering and pain.
His one and only desire while on earth was to please the heavenly father and to do His will as seen in several verses of the scriptures in the New Testament, including John 9:4, John 5:19, and John 4:34. When it looked as though Jesus couldn’t endure the pain anymore, He said, “Father, if you’re willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine” (Luke 22:42).
All believers must have this same mindset as Christ, according to Philippians 2:5-8. Everything we need to know about obedience can be learned from the life of Jesus. He wants us to trust Him completely and follow His divine leading. If we humble ourselves to surrender to God, our lives will be peaceful and meaningful.
