Several factors can put a person in a position of emotional distress. Here are some of the possible factors responsible for a broken heart.

1. Divorce

A woman who is downcast

Being divorced from a long-term partner is one of the most painful causes of heartbreak in individuals. Separation affect couples physically, emotionally and spiritually.

When a couple comes together to start a family, they tend to work towards a common plan, and long-term goals But when one of them suddenly decides to leave the marital relationship, the other may feel lost, leading to overwhelming sorrow of heart.

Even when the divorce is an agreement between the couple, it doesn’t prevent the feelings of pain that come with it. Divorce creates a disruption in the daily lives of those affected and may cause stress and sleepless nights.

For couples with children, the situation may be harder to cope with compared with those without children. Knowing that their once-united family is gradually falling apart and they’ll soon become a single dad and a single mom can be devastating.

Moreover, divorce can make a person question their self-worth. A woman going through a divorce may begin to feel unattractive, especially if her husband quickly moves on from the past relationship. Indeed, separation from a spouse is a really heartbreaking experience.

2. Job Loss

Financial security is important for survival, and losing a job can be a tough situation. Sincerely speaking, many people don’t love their jobs; they just have to pay the bills. Plus, having a job can improve one’s self-esteem and mental health.

If a person suddenly loses their job, they may have a hard time getting over the situation. As the bills begin to increase, such a person may suddenly become anxious.

Within a short time, the overwhelming feeling that comes with financial pressure can lead to constant restlessness.

For a married man, losing a job can affect the dynamics of his relationship with his wife and children. If he’s the primary provider of the home, the situation can make him angry and withdrawn. And to be real, no one wants to be around a person who spends all day lashing out at them.

If you recently lost your job with no hope of getting another soon, know that God has a better plan for your life. Hold on to God’s promise in Isaiah 41:10, which states,

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

3. Infidelity

Only a few things hurt more than knowing that a partner is cheating. Infidelity breaks trust, which is important for relationships to thrive.

When a person cheats in a relationship, they prove to be untrustworthy. With this realization, their partner will most likely feel so much pain that it can take a longer time to heal.

Additionally, the victim may blame themselves for the whole situation even if it’s not their fault. In some cases, they may not want to commit to someone else because of the painful experience of betrayal.

In case the victim later decides to continue the relationship with the person who cheated, their union will never be the same. They’ll likely begin to act like detectives, monitoring everything the other person does, their movements, and those they communicate with daily. As a result, they can become physically and mentally stressed from the constant surveillance.

Infidelity is one of the most heartbreaking experiences a person can go through. The word of God assures us in Deuteronomy 31:8 that the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us.

So if your partner leaves you for someone else, be assured that the God of all comfort is always with you.

4. Infertility

A couple who both looked troubled

Struggling to have kids can be devastating, especially if a couple has exhausted all possible options.

Some couples don’t want kids for personal reasons, which is understandable. But when a couple truly desire kids of their own and they’re not forthcoming, they’ll be in a state of physical and mental distress.

Infertility affects couples in many negative ways that they can’t imagine. It takes away their joy, peace, laughter, time, and money. In most cases, it may be a major cause of conflicts in a loving and healthy marriage.

Couples may need to run a series of tests or engage in several medical activities which may disrupt their daily plans. When infertility goes on for a longer period, there’s a high chance that the couples will become frustrated and sad.

Christian couples experiencing infertility may start to lose hope in God’s promises. But the good news is, the Lord sees every secret tear and hidden pain. At the right time, He will grant the heart’s desires of those who put their trust in Him.

5. Loss of a Loved One

When someone loses a loved one to death, their life never remains the same. While some take a long time to heal, others don’t get over the pain throughout their lives.

Frankly speaking, it’s not easy to heal from the pain of losing a close family member or friend. Constantly remembering they’re gone forever can create a feeling of loneliness and sorrow.

Everyone is conscious of the fact that humans are not immortal. Even this realization doesn’t prevent grief after someone dies. Losing a loved one is a painful experience that affects people in many unimaginable ways.

Maybe you’re grieving the death of someone special; know that the Lord sees your pain and loneliness. He will send the Holy Spirit, the great comforter, to heal and restore your broken heart.

3 Examples of Heartbreak in the Bible

All through scripture, we see different examples of people who received God’s help while going through difficult times. Here are a few examples of those who experienced heartbreak in the Bible.

1. Hagar

Sarah’s maidservant Hagar went through challenging times while living with Abraham and Sarah. Because Sarah was childless at an old age, she gave Hagar to Abraham so that she could have a child through her.

After Hagar got pregnant, she began to disregard her mistress, Sarah. For this reason, Sarah mistreated her until she couldn’t endure the harsh treatment anymore, and she fled into the desert.

At that moment, Hagar was pregnant, lonely, and helpless. But the angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar and told her to return to Sarah and submit to her. (Genesis 16)

Later, Hagar had a son for Abraham who was named Ishmael. Fortunately, Sarah also gave birth to her own son afterwards, whom Abraham gave the name Isaac. On the day Isaac was weaned, Sarah saw Ishmael laughing at her son. So she asked Abraham to send Ishmael away with his mother.

Again, Hagar and her son left Abraham’s house for the desert without any hope of survival. When the little water with Hagar finished, she left her son under a bush to die.

Hagar must have been sad and heartbroken while observing her son’s suffering. Suddenly, the God of hope appeared to Hagar in her hopeless situation to deliver her and Ishmael. (Genesis 21:8-21)

2. Hannah

Elkanah’s wife, Hannah, was barren for many years. To make matters worse, Hannah’s co-wife Peninah began to mock her repeatedly. Each year, when Elkanah’s family went to Shiloh, Hannah would become sorrowful to the point of losing her appetite.

During Hannah’s difficult moment, she continued seek the face of God. One day, while at the temple in Shiloh, Hannah began to weep and pray, but only her lips were moving.

In that moment of anguish and grief, she made a vow that if she had a son, she would dedicate him to the service of God.

Ultimately, the Lord remembered Hannah and blessed her with a son who was named Samuel. Hannah kept her promise by dedicating Samuel to the service of God throughout his lifetime. (1 Samuel 1)

3. Mary and Martha

When Lazarus of Bethany died, his sisters Martha and Mary became sorrowful. Since the sisters had a close relationship with Christ Jesus, they informed Him of Lazarus’ death.

Later, Jesus went to Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha, to raise Lazarus from the dead. By the time Jesus got to the village, and He saw people crying, the Bible recorded that Jesus wept (John 11:35, the shortest verse in scripture).

Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus, and asked those present to take the stone away from its entrance. Then, Jesus prayed, and Lazarus, who had been dead for four days, came back to life. (John 11)
