The biblical story of Nicodemus can be found in the book of John, chapters 3, 7, and 19. Let’s begin with his encounter with Jesus Christ.
Nicodemus Meets Jesus
The first biblical account of Nicodemus is in John3:1–15. Nicodemus was described as a pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council. Now, the pharisees are a group of Jews who adhere strictly to laws and traditions. And as a result of this, they didn’t agree with the teachings of Jesus throughout His time on earth. Apostle Paul (Saul) was also a Pharisee before he had an encounter with God on the way to Damascus (Acts 9).
Nevertheless, Nicodemus went to meet Jesus at night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” (John 3:2). Jesus then responded by saying that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they’re born again. Out of curiosity, Nicodemus asked how someone can be born again, since it’s impossible for them to enter their mother’s womb the second time.

Jesus continued to explain spiritual things to Nicodemus, but he didn’t understand, despite the fact that he was a teacher of Israel. Then, Jesus asked Nicodemus, If he didn’t believe earthly things, how would he believe heavenly things? The Lord further told him that no one has ever gone to heaven except the Son of Man.
The conversion that ensued between Christ Jesus and Nicodemus during his nighttime meeting ended in John 3:15. The verse that follows is one of the most famous verses of the scripture—John 3:16. It says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Nicodemus Defends Jesus
The second mention of Nicodemus is in the book of John7:50–51. According to these verses of the scripture, Nicodemus was a prominent member of the Sanhedrin, which serves as a court for the Jews.
John 7:45–53 records that the Chief Priests and the Pharisees commanded some temple guards to arrest Jesus. However, the guards couldn’t carry out the assignment, with the reason being that no one has ever spoken the way Jesus Christ did.
Understandably, the Pharisees were not happy with the guards, and they began to wonder if any of the rulers had also believed in Christ. In Jesus defense, Nicodemus told them to give Him a fair hearing before resorting to condemnation. But his fellow pharisees and the chief priest refused to listen because they’d made the final decision about Jesus.
Nicodemus Take Part in the Burial of Jesus
The final mention of Nicodemus was in John 19:39, which gives the biblical account of Jesus’ burial. After the crucifixion of Jesus, the Jewish leaders gave the command that all bodies should be taken down from the cross because the next day was the Sabbath day and the day of preparation.
Joseph of Arimathea, whom the Bible describes as a rich man (Matthew 27:57), went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus. He was a disciple of Jesus who associated with Him secretly because of the fear of the Jews.
Pilate granted Joseph the permission to take Jesus’ body, and he went with Nicodemus, who took a mixture of myrrh and aloe with him. Both men wrapped the body of Jesus with the burial spices in linen strips and laid him in a new tomb.
6 Lessons from the Story of Nicodemus in the Bible
While there are several lessons to learn from the story of Nicodemus in the Bible, let’s talk about six of them:
1. Learn to Seek the Truth
Nicodemus’ secret meeting with Jesus stresses the importance of being open to learning when it comes to the things of the spirit. Pharisees are famous for holding on to their laws and traditions as though their lives depend on them. And this is mostly as a result of their strict religious upbringing, which creates fear in their minds.
Usually, it takes a lot of effort and humility for a Pharisee to accept the teachings of Jesus, not to mention applying these teachings in their lives. Nicodemus must have seen and heard the way Jesus teaches and interacts with everyone, including sinners.
And even though Nicodemus did not visit Jesus in broad daylight, probably because he didn’t want the other Pharisees to see him, what he did was commendable.
He was willing to know the truth about the gospel by all means, and Jesus gave him an audience, satisfying his curiosity.
Like Nicodemus, we must open our minds to learning new things about our Christian faith. There’s no limit to the things we can learn from God’s word if we’re humble to seek the help of the Holy Spirit as our guide.

Any believer who doesn’t take their Christian belief seriously would eventually get carried away with the wind of false doctrines.
2. Acknowledge the Power of God
Another key lesson to learn from the story of Nicodemus in the Bible is that he acknowledged the power of God in the life of Jesus. In John 3:2, Nicodemus says, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.”
Most Pharisees and the religious leaders don’t believe that Jesus is the son of God or that He performs miracles in the name of the Lord God Almighty. Even in Matthew 12:24, the Pharisees accused Jesus of driving out demons only by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons.
But Nicodemus didn’t follow the crowd to make negative declarations about Jesus because he understood the power of God.
No matter what anyone believes or says, God exists, and He’s superior to any being in heaven and on earth. He knows all things and can do all things, including those things that seem impossible. For this reason, the Lord deserves our continual worship, adoration, honor, and all the glory.
Those who acknowledge God in their dealings will always see the manifestation of His power in every areas of their lives. In Matthew 13:58, the Bible records that Jesus did not do many miracles in His hometown because of their lack of faith. This implies that those who constantly argue about God’s existence and supremacy would limit His show of greatness and miracles in their lives.
Furthermore, in the book of 1 Samuel 2:30, the scripture makes it clear that God will honor those who honor Him, and those who despise Him will be lightly esteemed. So as believers, we must always acknowledge the supremacy of God because He truly deserves it.
3. Declare Your Faith Openly
Initially, Nicodemus was not confident enough to associate with Jesus, which was probably why he went to meet Him at night. However, he later became bold to the point of defending Jesus in the presence of the other members of the Sanhedrin. Additionally, Nicodemus played a key role in the burial of Jesus, suggesting that he finally developed the courage to declare his faith in Christ publicly.
No one who has ever had a divine encounter with Christ Jesus would want to continue to worship Him secretly. There’s a kind of boldness that comes with knowing Christ that casts away all fears and inhibitions. Acts 1:8 says,
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
As believers, we must be willing to let people know that the spirit of God dwells in us through our speech, conduct, and daily interactions with others. We must never join the people of the world to commit fraud, cheat, fight, or engage in other sinful acts that displease God. There must be a difference between the way we live our lives and the way the people of the world live their lives.
When we declare our faith openly, it will be difficult for those who don’t know Christ to entice us with their unholy acts. And even though we may suffer discrimination because of our beliefs, it’s better than sinning against God.
4. Spiritual Rebirth is Important
Jesus tells Nicodemus in John 3:3 that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they’re born again. This verse of the Bible makes us understand the importance of spiritual rebirth in the lives of everyone who wants to be free from eternal condemnation.
Through Adam the first man, sin came into the world, and anyone who continues to live a life contrary to the will of God is spiritually dead, and they’re a slave to sin. The Bible says in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
From the moment a person accepts the Lord Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they move from death to life and become a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17). Then, the Holy Spirit will begin to live in them, teaching and guiding them in the way of the Lord.
Nowadays, many people confuse religious activities with spiritual rebirth, which is a different concept. If you don’t have a personal relationship with Christ, but instead perform different activities in your local assembly, you’re not a believer.
True believers are not just those who work for God, but they’re those who walk with God every day.
5. Always Defend What is Right
As a key member of the Sanhedrin, Nicodemus used his influence to defend Jesus Christ because he knew it was the right thing to do. Nicodemus may have had a bad opinion about Jesus, just like the other members of the council. However, his one-on-one interaction with the Savior must have convinced him that there was no questionable character in Him.
There’s a difference between knowing what is right and doing it, and most people know this for a fact. But they’ll go ahead to support evil deeds just to be loved and accepted by the people of the world.
When it comes to the things of the kingdom, there’s no sitting on the fence; it’s either you completely devote to God or you fully commit to wordly things. And it’s impossible to defend what is just if you belong in the same group as those who do evil.
James 4:4 says that friendship with the world is enmity with God, and whoever chooses to be a friend of the world will become an enemy of God. As a believer, determine to stand up for the truth wherever you find yourself, just as Nicodemus did for Jesus.
6. Remain Steadfast in Faith
After Nicodemus had a conversation with Jesus, he decided to follow the right path without hesitation. Not only did he defend Jesus in the presence of the Sanhedrins, but he also played a key role in Jesus’ burial. Though Nicodemus was a Pharisee, he knew that the most important thing was to focus on Jesus, the light of the world.
Nicodemus’ determination to be with Jesus reminds us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our Christian belief. Challenges and temptations will come, but we mustn’t allow them to separate us from the love of Christ. Luke 9:62 says, “Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Therefore, decide not to look back in your Christian journey, as it comes with serious consequences, just like the case of Lot’s wife in the Old Testament of the Bible.
