God’s messages come in all kinds of ways
Job 33:14-16
For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings.
We cannot say that God will never use auditory experiences like ears ringing to send a message to someone – That would mean we limit God and divine intervention based on our own understanding. However, we must remember who God is.

Is spiritual ringing in the ears one of the ways God speaks in the Bible?
There is not a time in the Bible when God spoke to someone through a ringing in their ears. But He does speak to people in other ways.

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.

1 Kings 19:11-13
The Lord said to Elijah, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Understanding a spiritual ringing in the ears
While some might try to say right ear rings mean one thing, and left ear rings mean another – you need to always test these things with the Bible. There is no Biblical meaning of right ear ringing; and there’s no Biblical meaning of left ear ringing.
Things like spiritual awakening, guides, a guardian angel, higher realm, energies, the Universe as God, a third eye, and inner hunches are different things from what the Bible speaks about…
Nowadays, there are a lot of New Age spiritual perspectives woven in with what some modern Christians believe about God. This might be what the Bible warned about…
2 Timothy 4:3-4
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
Consider this: Do you have itching ears because you have turned away from God’s teaching and wandered toward myths and other beliefs?
1 John 4:1
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
The Bible does not mention ear ringing in any other place than this bit about itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Perhaps you have been open to spiritual guidance and spiritual practice that does not align with the truth of God.
You can pray this prayer if your ears are ringing:
Dear Heavenly Father, I have gotten lost. Please forgive me for where I have sought deeper spiritual significance in things that are not of you. I want to know the voice of the Lord above all else. Cleanse my body from any evil and fill me with Your Spirit instead. In JESUS’ name – the only name that bears power of salvation – I pray, Amen.
Many followers of God have shared personal experiences of how they received divine messages from God since Biblical times. So we are not counting out the idea that God might be speaking to you through your sensory experience of a ringing in your ears, but I do need to give a gentle nudge that these things should always be tested…

- Is it in the Bible?

James 1:17
God does not change like shifting shadows.
- Does it agree with God’s character?
If you feel afraid, anxious, or unsafe, it is not from God.
2 Timothy 1:7
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear. - What do my mentors say about this?
Test your inkling by going to spiritual leaders and getting their input.
Proverbs 11:14
For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.
Hebrews 13:17
Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.
Say, you’ve tested it in these three ways and you still feel sure that God is trying to tell you something through the spiritual ringing of your ears – I want to invite you to journey into the Bible and discover what it might mean for you today. Remember, “God did not intend for his words to be twisted, he intended for them to be studied and understood” – Ps. Arnold Brevick.

Significant Biblical passages about ears
We do not follow any doctrine or believe anything we hear. What we do have (to hold on to) is a rich tapestry of Biblical symbolism through all the books of the Bible and we have a crowd of believers around us.
Your ears might be ringing because God is trying to get your attention
Matthew 11:15; and in many other places in the Gospels. Jesus said this all the time!
Whoever has ears, let them hear.
Job 33:14-16
For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings.
Isaiah 30:21
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
Are you hearing God’s voice ringing in your ears?

More Bible verses about hearing, listening, and ears
James 1:19-20
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
Romans 10:17
Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
Exodus 21:5-6
(In the 7th year) But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,’ then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.
Proverbs 21:13
Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.
Divine communication and the Holy Spirit of God
Acts 2:1-4
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
It is fairly common for Christians to have spiritual experiences through the Holy Spirit of God who resides inside them. The Holy Spirit can speak to believers through physical sensations in their bodies. Such experiences do happen.
John 16:13
Jesus (about the Holy Spirit): But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
Sometimes you might feel a wind blowing or smell something that has no human explanation for being in the room.
Sensory experiences I’ve had with God:
- Sense of smell: I remember one particularly sweet worship time at a Songs of Solomon Bible study when I was about sixteen years old when the room smelled of green apples. There’s much to discover about fragrance in the Bible!
- Body aches: I’m familiar with the church service where someone goes to the front and says: “My back suddenly started aching, and this is not my own pain, I believe it’s spiritual. Is there someone here with back ache – I believe the Lord wants to heal you today.” Then we pray and the person gets healed.
- Sense of sight: I was wondering if God is near once when I was going through a hard time when the Lord started showing me owls everywhere. I was praying about a job and this confirmed I should take it since the company was called ‘Journal Owl’.
- Heart beating: I have experienced God in my body when my heart starts beating rapidly during Bible study, so I know the Holy Spirit is prompting me to say what’s on my mind. Then I share it and it encourages somebody.
- Ear piercing: I was 25 years old when I decided to pierce the helix of my ear – I didn’t think too much about it. My mentor later shared Exodus 21:5-6 with me and we counted it’d been 7 years since I decided to live wholeheartedly for the Lord!
- Sense of hearing: I was working at the kitchen table one day, writing, when I suddenly heard angelic music sounds. I realized the fan was blowing over our music stand with guitars and causing the strings to make beautiful praise songs to the Lord.
What’s the meaning of a spiritual ringing in the ears in the Bible?
The point is: God speaks in a myriad of ways. We cannot limit Him to only one way we feel comfortable with.
If you’ve come to the end of this article and you still have peace that the spiritual ringing in your ears are from God, consider using Samuel’s line and say “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening” – And then? Just listen. Sit in silence and focus on God. Clear your mind of distractions, and listen.
Samuel’s ears were ringing with God calling his voice
Here’s the story from 1 Samuel 3:2-11:
One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel.
Samuel answered, “Here I am.” And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”
So he went and lay down. Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”
Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.
So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” And the Lord said to Samuel….”

FAQ
Spiritually, ringing in the ears is often interpreted as a call to listen more closely to God’s voice. In the Bible, hearing is symbolic of obedience and spiritual awareness. Some believers see ear ringing as a reminder to quiet distractions and tune into what the Holy Spirit may be saying.
In Scripture, earrings appear both as symbols of wealth and as offerings to God. For example, in Exodus 32:2–3, earrings were melted down to form the golden calf, showing how even adornment could be used for either worship or idolatry. Spiritually, earrings can represent devotion, identity, or transformation depending on the context.
The Bible frequently refers to having “ears to hear” as the ability to perceive God’s truth. Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear” (Matthew 11:15). This emphasizes spiritual sensitivity — being open to divine guidance rather than just physical hearing.
Ringing in the ears can symbolize heightened spiritual awareness or a moment when God is trying to get your attention. It’s often seen as a nudge to pray, reflect, or seek peace amidst noise. However, it’s important to also consider physical causes and take care of your health.
Spiritually, ears represent discernment, wisdom, and the ability to understand divine truth. In Proverbs 20:12, it says, “The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both.” Listening to God’s Word leads to growth, faith, and deeper relationship with Him.
Some interpret ear ringing as a spiritual warning or alert to pay attention to your thoughts, surroundings, or relationships. It may be a reminder from God to realign your focus and stay sensitive to His direction. Prayer and discernment can help clarify its meaning.
Spiritually, ear problems can symbolize resistance to hearing God’s truth or being overwhelmed by worldly noise. The Bible often encourages believers to “be still” (Psalm 46:10) and listen to God’s voice for restoration and peace.
Jesus often spoke about the importance of spiritual hearing. In Mark 4:9, He said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” This means truly listening and understanding His words — not just hearing them, but applying them in daily life.
In spiritual symbolism, a ring often represents covenant, eternity, and unity — as seen in marriage and divine promises. In biblical terms, rings signify authority and commitment, such as when Pharaoh gave Joseph his signet ring (Genesis 41:42).
Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man in his heart, so is he.” This verse highlights the power of thoughts and inner beliefs in shaping our lives. It reminds believers that spiritual hearing and thinking must align with God’s truth to walk in peace and purpose.
