Is Smoking a Sin in the Bible? Biblical Perspective

Since there’s no mention of smoking in the Bible, is it a sin? I’ll give my opinion about this sensitive question from the biblical perspective for better understanding.

Frankly speaking, Christians who smoke hardly speak freely about the act, probably because of the fear of people’s judgment or the guilt of their conscience.

Questions like this come about when believers struggle with addiction. Deep down you feel it is not right, but at the same time you cannot stop. Moreover, the Bible didn’t say anything about smoking, so it seems there’s no problem with it.

In this article, I’ll discuss smoking from the scriptural point of view, not just statistics or science. Hopefully after reading, you’ll understand whether it’s a sin or not.

Is Smoking a Sin in the Bible?

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).

Being born again is a call to live a life fully surrendered to God. And as followers of Christ, we reflect God’s glory all around, in our minds, our hearts, and our bodies. For this reason, we have to ask ourselves all the time if the things we do or begin to do are right in God’s eyes.

Regarding smoking, the Bible never mentions anything about it, even as a sin. There is also no record of anyone who smoked in the Bible.

Furthermore, the Bible has many dos and don’ts that address specific topics. Still, no verse directly condemns smoking. But remember, the Bible is the manual of life that holds principles throughout to guide us.

These principles are powerful, and they help us understand if the things we do are right or wrong, even if not directly mentioned. Hence, what we can mostly do in the case of smoking is to turn to these biblical principles for guidance.

One biblical principle in the scripture tells us not to be a slave to anything (1 Corinthians 6:12). Nicotine, the naturally occurring chemical in the tobacco plant, is addictive. Once you are addicted to it, you become a slave to it, making smoking a sin.

Another principle is that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we are meant to honor God with them (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Now, imagine damaging your own body knowingly; this makes smoking a willful sin. In addition, the Bible also says all we do should be done to the glory of God.

Smoking obviously doesn’t glorify God and has no positive impact on our lives as believers.

7 Harmful Effects of Smoking

There are many downsides to smoking. It affects you physically, mentally, psychologically, and spiritually. Let’s talk about 7 of the most common ones.

1. Addiction Problem

It always starts with a few cigarettes and grows into a habit that is hard to stop. When you think about smoking a lot and also can’t control how often you smoke, you are now addicted.

The use of tobacco becomes a part of you, and trying to quit would feel so uncomfortable. Additionally, you now become a slave to smoking and no longer free as a believer should be.

2. Damage to the Body

Smoking is a major health hazard that causes a lot of health problems, and every doctor will tell you that. The health risks are not hidden; there are warnings on the packages.

According to the American Lung Association, smoking is a main cause of respiratory diseases like lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). You are also at risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and other organ diseases when you smoke.

Scripture talks about the stewardship of the body and how important it is. Our bodies are where the spirit of God dwells, and we willingly damage them by smoking.

3. Influences Self-Control

Self-control is one fruit of the Spirit that every believer should develop. So we must also include practicing it throughout our daily lives.

Now, smoking is addictive and easily becomes a bad habit. You will find yourself not being able to say no to it, even when you are aware it is bad for you.

Right there and then, your self-control should be questioned, and there is a need for a spiritual check-up. You are now being controlled, not the other way around.

4. Hinders Spiritual Growth

Praying and studying God’s word continually helps us grow spiritually. However, smoking can distract you from all that. That’s right, it has its way of getting into your daily routine.

During the times you need relief and relaxation, you might find yourself turning to smoking rather than prayer or God’s word. Moreover, the urge to smoke often becomes so strong that you begin to idolize it. And this is one sin leading to another, as God frowns at idolatry.

5. Harming the Health of Others

When you smoke around others, you also put their health at risk. If you are wondering how many are affected today, there is a great number.

Secondhand smoke from burning tobacco products causes thousands of lung cancer deaths in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. It leads to the premature deaths of many people who do not smoke.

Imagine you are not just being a danger to yourself but also to others around you. This goes against what the scriptures teach us about loving our neighbors and doing no harm (Romans 13:10).

6. Poor Use of Resources

God provides us with the resources to live throughout our daily lives. They come in handy to overcome challenges, serve others, and promote the kingdom of God. Hence, we are meant to manage these resources and not spend them on worthless things.

Judging from that, spending on a pack of cigarettes or substances to smoke is wasteful. It is a terrible way to use the resources God has given us. There have been many reports of smokers choosing to spend on cigarettes over food or household items.

Smoking is so bad that you stop caring how little you have, so long as you can afford a pack of cigarettes. This kind of lifestyle displeases God and man and so should be discouraged.

7. Negative Influence on Others

Apostle Paul wrote to the church of Corinth, saying, “Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.” (1 Corinthians 8:9)

He continued with a powerful example: “For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?” (1 Corinthians 8:10)

In light of that, bear in mind that we have those who look up to us. Therefore, we can influence them negatively without even knowing.

Influence is powerful, and aside from our positive habits, people can imitate our negative habits.

5 Practical Ways to Quit Smoking

It’s not easy to quit smoking, but it’s not impossible either. Here are ways to take control and fight smoking for good.

1. Turn to God in Prayer

Prayer remains one of our most powerful tools as believers. Through prayer, we connect with God, seek His guidance, find peace, and experience changes. God made us and can always remodel us.

Put God first in your fight against smoking, for He gives us the strength to fight battles like this. It is much more difficult to do so on our own.

So, take all to the throne of God with confidence. His grace is sufficient to help us in times of need (Hebrews 4:16). Ask that He grant you the Holy Spirit to rebuild any lost self-control against your urges to smoke.

2. Using Medical Stop-Smoking Aids

Nicotine Replacement Therapy, like medical patches, pills, and gums, has been helpful with the fight against the use of tobacco. These treatments, combined with counseling, can help you quit smoking totally. Feel free to visit a doctor or medical expert about your condition.

Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us that those who are sick need a physician (Mark 2:17). Since the goal here is to overcome smoking, you can always get medical help.

3. Fasting Helps

Smoking can be spiritual, and one way to fight it is by fasting. When you fast, you are going hours without nicotine, too, which gives your body room for a detox process. This way, your body starts to repair itself, especially now that harmful substances are no longer entering it.

If possible, you can fast in areas where you can’t access cigarettes or any other substance you smoke. It helps you stay committed even when you feel heavily tempted to light one up. In addition to this, if you are not sure how long to fast, start with a week-long fast. You can have your breaks each day in the evening around 6 pm.

4. Identify and Manage Triggers

Identifying the things that encourage you to smoke is important. When you know these things, you can stay away from them once and for all. These triggers could be places, items, people, and stress.

As you determine to quit smoking, you would have to stop going to places that encourage you to smoke. Plus, you must throw away your lighters, ashtrays, or anything that reminds you of smoking.

You should also reduce or totally stop eating foods or beverages that make you want to smoke. Now in the case of stress, you have to develop new ways to manage it.

Going for walks, exercising, and Bible studies, among many others, are great alternatives.

5. Seek Support From Fellow Believers

Quitting smoking does not have to be a journey you take alone. God often works through other believers to offer encouragement and support. Be bold enough to share your struggles with trusted Christians. This way, they can provide prayer support and motivation during such a difficult moment.

Being surrounded by people who encourage godly living can help you stay committed to quitting. The Bible reminds us that we are called to support one another in love and bear each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2).

Final Thoughts

Smoking is a sin, even if it is not stated in the scriptures. It goes against many solid principles in the Bible, which is enough to know it is wrong.

Good health is God’s gift, and our actions should honor it, not do the opposite. If you were thinking of smoking before now, you have to stop. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, so do not defile it.

If you’re struggling with smoking, there is hope. The grace of God is sufficient, and with His help, you can be free from the bondage of smoking.
