Puppet Skits for VBS: 7 Bible Scripts for Kids 2026

Skit 1 · Lost Sheep · Luke 15:3–7

This is the warm-up skit on most lists of puppet skits for VBS for a reason — the lost sheep beat is unbeatable for preschool. Shepherd Sam counts his flock at sundown — one, two, three, four, five — and discovers Sheepy is gone. The other four sheep puppets all give terrible advice (“she’ll be back,” “she’s fine,” “let’s just eat dinner”). Sam grabs his staff and his dog puppet sidekick, Biscuit, and heads into the dark. Each scene is one short hill — a wolf scare, a thorn bush, a cliff-edge baa — until Sam finds Sheepy stuck in a hole crying. He carries her home on his shoulders. The four other sheep are stunned he came back for “just one.” Sam ends with the line that ties the whole thing to Jesus’ story.

Closing line: “I’d come back for any of you. That’s how the Good Shepherd loves us — He came back for me, too.”

Skit 2 · Fruit of the Spirit · Galatians 5:22–23

The Galatians 5 list is the most-requested topic on every wishlist of puppet skits for VBS, so here’s a fresh take. Pastor Pineapple is hosting a VBS bake-off, and nine fruit puppets are competing to be named the best. Trouble is, only one fruit can win — except Pastor Pineapple keeps confusing the rules. Each fruit (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control) gets a 60-second monologue showing what they look like in real life — Patience waits while Joy dances, Self-Control says no to a third cookie, Kindness shares his lunch with the new kid. Halfway through, Pastor Pineapple realizes the fruits are not nine different prizes — they’re one fruit with nine flavors growing on the same tree, the Holy Spirit Tree. Big finish: all nine puppets pop up together while the kids shout the list out loud.

Hook for kids: each fruit puppet hands a paper “fruit” to a kid in the audience as they exit.

Skit 3 · Tower of Babel · Genesis 11:1–9

Genesis 11 rarely shows up on lists of puppet skits for VBS, but it should — the comedy writes itself. Foreman Phil is leading a crew of seven puppets building the world’s tallest tower so they can “be famous without God.” Things go great for the first two minutes — they sing a work song, stack pretend bricks, brag about how the tower will reach the clouds. Then God scrambles their language. Suddenly Phil is asking for a hammer and his crew is handing him sandwiches, baby ducks, and a tuba. The whole show becomes a five-minute escalating gibberish comedy until the tower crashes (giant cymbal sound effect). Phil ends sitting in the rubble, talking straight to the kids: building stuff for our own glory always falls. The tower we should be building points to God.

Best for: high-energy mid-week slot when the room is restless and you need laughs first, lesson second.

Skit 4 · Pentecost · Acts 2:1–4

Seven disciple puppets are hiding in an upper room, scared to leave. Peter keeps making excuses: “We can’t go preach yet, we’re not ready, we don’t even speak French.” A French-speaking friend puppet pops in just to mock them. Then — wind machine on full, sound effects of rushing wind, paper “tongues of fire” lowered on fishing line over each puppet head. Each disciple suddenly speaks a different language (have your puppeteers shout “Hola! Bonjour! Konnichiwa!”). Peter steps forward and preaches the shortest, clearest gospel summary your kids will ever hear — the story of Jesus in 90 seconds. The skit ends with the disciples bursting out the door to tell the city. Big visual moment for kids on the preaching power of the Holy Spirit.

Use this for: outreach programs and any VBS week where the theme is mission, courage, or Holy Spirit.

Skit 5 · Salvation · Romans 6:23, John 3:16

This is the gospel piece — the one slot in your week of puppet skits for VBS where the invitation actually lands. Max the dog puppet finds a wrapped gift on the church steps with his name on it. Every other animal puppet who walks by tells him he has to earn it — Cat says do 100 tricks first, Bird says fly to him three times a day, Squirrel says save up acorns for a year. Max tries everything and gets exhausted. Pastor walks in, picks up the box, and says: “Buddy, it has your name on it. That means it’s already yours. You don’t earn a gift — you just take it.” Max opens it. Inside: a heart-shaped collar tag that says “Loved Forever.” The kids learn the right thing about the gospel — God’s good news is a gift of grace, never a paycheck.

Skit 6 · Christmas all about the Birth of Jesus · Luke 2

If you only run one of these puppet skits for VBS as a closing-night feature, this is the one. It’s a feature script disguised as a news broadcast. Anchor Andy and Anchor Annie sit at a puppet news desk reporting “BREAKING: Strange Star Sighted Over Bethlehem.” Cut to the field reporter (live actor allowed) interviewing shepherd puppets who are still shaking. Cut to the weather puppet trying to explain a star that doesn’t move. Cut to a traffic puppet covering the census jam on Route Bethlehem. Then the wise men call in from a satellite phone asking for directions. Final segment: the camera “goes inside” the stable — a hush falls — and Anchor Annie’s voice cracks as she describes the baby. Everybody on the news team ends in the stable singing one verse of “Away in a Manger.” Kids learn what Christmas is all about by watching the news team learn it.

Skit 7 · Easter all about Resurrection · Matthew 28, John 20

Sister to skit 6 — same newsroom format, brand new story. The reporters are camped outside the tomb on Sunday morning. Roman guard puppets give shaky on-camera statements (“we definitely didn’t fall asleep, sir”). Mary Magdalene rushes past the camera crying. The stone rolls away on cue (giant rolling sound effect, two stagehands tipping a foam boulder). The angel puppet appears and gives the headline of the universe — “He is not here. He is risen.” The reporters chase the disciples to the upper room, ambush Peter mid-bagel, and finally hand the microphone to a kid in the front row to read John 20:31 out loud. Kids walk out understanding that the story of Jesus did not end on Friday — it kept going Sunday, and it’s still going now.
