Tips for Changing Your Church Sign
After years of watching church signs go up and down, here are the things that actually make a difference.
Character count matters more than you think
Most traditional letter boards hold 35–45 characters per row. Count before you commit. The signs in this article are labeled with exact character counts — use those numbers. A message that’s 47 characters but only 40 slots is a headache no one needs on a Tuesday morning.
Capitalize everything on the board
Lowercase letters take more tiles and read worse from a distance. All caps, every time. This is why the letter board cards in this article show text in uppercase — that’s how the sign will actually look.
Change it on a Monday or Tuesday
Most people drive past your sign mid-week, not on the way to church Sunday. If you change it Saturday, you’ve lost most of the week’s impressions. Monday or Tuesday gets you maximum exposure for the upcoming Sunday.
One idea per sign
Two messages on one sign cancel each other out. “EASTER SUNDAY SERVICES 10AM & 12PM ALSO COME JOIN US FOR BRUNCH” is too much. Pick the most important thing. Let it breathe.
