Welcome & Invitation
Best for: Reaching your neighbors, unchurched passersby, or anyone who’s never walked through your doors. These verses say “you belong here” without being pushy.
The most powerful church sign isn’t one that impresses the congregation — it’s the one that stops a stranger in their car and makes them think about walking in. The word of his grace, as Paul calls it in Acts 20:32, is able to build people up — and a church sign is one of the most direct ways to put that word in front of people who may never seek it out. James 1:17 reminds us that every good and perfect gift is from above — and a well-chosen sign verse might be the gift someone didn’t know they needed that day. These welcome verses do that job.

This is the single most effective invitation verse on a church sign. It doesn’t assume the person driving by knows Jesus — it just meets them where they are. Tired? Overloaded? Come. That’s it.

Not “come find God” — He’s already looking for them. This verse flips the direction of the invitation in a way that’s genuinely surprising to someone who didn’t grow up in church.

Perfect for a season when your community is struggling — job losses, anxiety, isolation. Jesus didn’t come to give people a religion to follow. He came to give them a life worth living.

One of the great open invitations in the Old Testament. No requirements, no prerequisites. Just come. The visual of water in a dry season is immediately relatable.
“Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.” — Revelation 22:17
The last great invitation in Scripture. “Whoever wishes” — that’s as wide-open as it gets. If you want it, it’s yours.
“Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons…shall be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 8:38–39
For the person driving by who is convinced they’ve gone too far, done too much. This verse is the answer. Use it when your community has experienced loss, addiction, or public tragedy.
A Real Moment
A church secretary I know told me she used Matthew 11:28 on the sign the week after a plant closure laid off 400 people in her small town. Three people she’d never seen before showed up the following Sunday and said the sign stopped them. One of them was in her car crying when she read it. The Gospel Message
Best for: Easter season, evangelistic emphasis months, or any week when the church is specifically focused on sharing the good news of salvation and eternal life.
A church sign is one of the few pieces of public theology your congregation puts in front of the whole community. Gospel verses here carry real weight — especially for someone who’s never heard it plainly stated.

The whole gospel in one sentence. It doesn’t soften either side — death or life. For a sign, use the second half: “The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (55 chars)
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6
This is one of Jesus Christ’s most direct statements about his own identity. Use the first half on the sign — “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (37 chars) — and let the reference do the rest.
“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” — Acts 4:12
Peter preaching in Jerusalem after healing a man. No hedging, no politeness. Use this during evangelism emphasis months when you want a bold, clear declaration of the Christian faith.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8
If your community carries a lot of religious performance culture — trying to earn it, prove it, achieve it — this verse cuts straight through. You didn’t earn it. It was given.

The first public words of Jesus. Direct. Urgent. Theologically rich. For a sign, use it during seasons of spiritual renewal or when your church is doing a series on the kingdom of God.
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” — Romans 10:9

Hope & Encouragement
Best for: Difficult seasons in your community — job losses, health crises, grief, national anxiety. These verses speak to the person who drives past your sign at their lowest point.
You don’t always know who’s driving by. A lot of people won’t walk in. But they’ll read the sign. And sometimes a word of hope on the right day at the right moment is exactly what God uses.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” — Jeremiah 29:11
The most recognized hope verse in the Bible. On a church sign, trim it: “I know the plans I have for you — hope and a future.” (50 chars) It retains the promise and fits beautifully on two rows.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
For the week after a community tragedy. Simple. Specific. True. Lot of people will drive by and need exactly this word on exactly this day — and they’ll have no idea how you knew.
“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.” — Isaiah 40:31
Use the full verse if you have a digital church sign or a church banner with space. For a small marquee, trim to: “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” (51 chars)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” — Romans 8:28
Note the word “all.” Not most things. Not easy things. All things. That’s either wildly comforting or absolutely challenging depending on where you are — and that tension is exactly what makes it a great sign verse.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
The verse God spoke to Paul when he begged for relief and didn’t get it. For anyone in your community who is hanging on by a thread right now — this one lands differently than a “victory” verse.
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7
The best verse in Scripture for anxious people — and there are a lot of anxious people driving past your sign. Use after the election season, during economic downturns, or any week that feels uncertain.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.” — Isaiah 41:10
God spoke this to Israel in exile. Not “I’ll fix your situation” — just “I’m with you.” Sometimes that’s enough. Sign-ready trim: “Fear not, for I am with you.” (27 chars)
Challenge & Good Works
Best for: Waking up a congregation that’s gotten comfortable, or signaling to the neighborhood that your church actually does something. These verses push — in a good way.
Not every sign needs to comfort. Some weeks the neighborhood needs a church that speaks the truth plainly — not with judgment, but with courage. These verses do that.
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16
This verse does double duty — it challenges your congregation and advertises your church’s good works to the community at the same time. When others see your good deeds and the glory of God shows through, that’s the sign working exactly as intended. Use it when your church is actively serving: food drives, community projects, disaster relief.
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” — James 1:22
Blunt. No softening. James doesn’t do gentle. Perfect for a church that takes serving seriously and wants the neighborhood to know faith here isn’t just Sunday morning.
“What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” — Micah 6:8
Three things. That’s the whole requirement. This verse is particularly powerful during election years or social conflict when people are asking what Christian faithfulness actually looks like.

The most searched comfort verse in America — but it’s actually a challenge. Stop trusting your own understanding. Stop working it out yourself. That’s harder than it sounds, and the sign makes people sit with it.

The Great Commission. Use it when your church is launching a missions emphasis, a baptism Sunday, or a community outreach campaign. Sign-trim: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” (35 chars)

For a church that wants to signal to the neighborhood: we’re not just talk. This is the sign you put up the same week you’re running a food pantry, doing home repairs, or volunteering at the school.

The whole law. Two commands. Jesus said everything else hangs on these. A reminder to the congregation — and the neighborhood — that Christianity is fundamentally relational, not transactional. Paul warned Timothy about people who are lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God (2 Timothy 3:4).
