Someone types “kundalini in the Bible” at midnight because something real happened to them. Maybe it was years of kundalini yoga before they came to faith. Maybe it was a spontaneous moment during meditation — heat shooting up the spine, visions, an altered state — that nobody warned them about. Maybe they heard the phrase “kundalini spirit” in a charismatic church and they’re not sure what to do with their own history.

The word kundalini doesn’t appear in the Christian Bible. But the question it raises does: how do you test a spiritual experience? What separates the Holy Ghost from a counterfeit? How do you discern between unclean spirits and the Spirit of God?

Modern kundalini yoga was popularized in the West by Yogi Bhajan starting in 1968. His system combined breathwork, movement, and mantra to trigger kundalini awakening. Physical signs people report include heat or electricity moving up the base of the spine, involuntary body movements called kriyas, visions, emotional releases, and altered states of consciousness. The Bhagavad Gita and other ancient eastern spiritual texts describe this spiritual energy in detail — as does a wide range of Indian mystic traditions and kundalini shakti literature.
Some people experience kundalini awakening spontaneously — without any kundalini yoga practice at all. Others pursue it deliberately through breathwork and meditation. Christians and non-Christians both report these experiences. The question isn’t whether it happens. The question is what’s behind it.
Is Kundalini in the Bible? The Honest Answer
The term kundalini in the Bible appears nowhere — not in any translation, not in the original Hebrew or Greek, not in the Gnostic texts or the apocryphal Gospel of Philip that some writers try to cite. None of the biblical authors used the concept. The word itself didn’t exist outside Indian tradition until the 20th century.
That silence matters — but it doesn’t end the conversation.
The Bible says quite a lot about spiritual energy, spiritual power, fiery serpents, evil spirits, unclean spirits, the life force in human beings, and how to test what is from God. What it doesn’t offer is any framework that maps to the Hindu model of dormant serpent power coiled at the base of the spine, rising through chakras via technique.
The biblical model is fundamentally different. God’s Spirit is not an impersonal energy force to be unlocked. He’s a Person who gives Himself freely as a gift. Across all 40-plus authors who wrote the Bible over 1,500 years, not one describes spiritual power as a coiled energy waiting to be released from the base of the human body through spiritual practices.
However, dismissing the conversation with “kundalini isn’t mentioned” misses the actual question people are asking — which is about the spiritual experience itself, not the Sanskrit term. And the Bible has a very clear answer for that.
The 1 John 4 Test: How to Discern the Kundalini Spirit
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” — 1 John 4:1 (NIV)
John wasn’t writing abstractly. The early church was already encountering spiritual experiences and manifestations that needed testing. He gave a framework — and that framework applies directly to the kundalini in the Bible question today.
Isaiah 8:19–20 reinforces it: “When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists… should not a people inquire of their God?… To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.” The standard has always been Scripture, not spiritual experience itself.
Four Tests the Bible Gives You for Any Spiritual Experience
Together, 1 John 4, 1 Corinthians 12–14, and Galatians 5 give us four questions to ask:
Does it acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord? (1 John 4:2–3; 1 Cor 12:3). The kundalini spirit points toward higher consciousness and the true self — not toward Lord Jesus Christ specifically.
What fruit does it produce long-term? (Gal 5:22–23). The Holy Spirit produces love, joy, peace, and patience. Kundalini awakening produces a wide range of outcomes — from reported bliss and spiritual enlightenment to documented psychological crisis.
Who initiates — you or God? (John 3:8; Acts 2). The Holy Ghost is given, not earned. Kundalini energy is awakened by you — through kundalini yoga, breathwork, or meditation. That directional difference matters enormously.
Does it submit to Scripture? (Isa 8:19–20). Spiritual experiences that move you toward ancient eastern spiritual texts as the authority, away from God’s Word, fail this test.
Applied to kundalini in the Bible discernment: at minimum two of these four tests — who initiates it, and what it points toward — fail definitively. The other two depend on your specific situation and are worth examining honestly.

4 Words That Explain the Whole Debate (One Will Surprise You)
You can’t fully understand kundalini in the Bible discussion without knowing what these four words actually mean — two from the Bible’s original languages, one from Latin anatomy, and one from Sanskrit. Together they tell the whole story.
Kundalini
Sanskrit — “kundal” = coiled
Literally “the coiled one.” Refers to a sleeping serpent coiled 3.5 times at the base of the spine. Kundalini shakti = “the serpent power.” The term kundalini and its entire system of spiritual awakening is built on this central image: a dormant serpent waiting to rise through the human body toward spiritual enlightenment.
The serpent imagery is not incidental — it is the defining symbol of the tradition. That matters when comparing it to Scripture.
Nachash (נָחָשׁ)
Hebrew — Genesis 3 serpent
The Hebrew word for serpent in Genesis 3. Its root also connects to “to shine” or “to gleam” (nechoshet = bronze). Moses lifted a bronze serpent — nachash nechoshet — on a pole in the wilderness so that whoever looked at it was healed (Numbers 21:8–9). Jesus later used this exact image as a type of Himself being lifted up (John 3:14). The fiery serpents of Numbers 21 come from the same root.
The Bible uses serpent imagery — but always pointing toward Christ, never toward a power rising through the human spine.
Sacrum
Latin — os sacrum = “the holy bone”
The large triangular bone at the base of the spine — exactly where kundalini is said to coil. Romans called it os sacrum (“the sacred bone”) and considered it holy for burial rites, believing it was the last part of the body to decay and would be used in resurrection. Modern anatomy kept the name. The word sacred and the word sacrum share the same Latin root: sacer.
The same bone kundalini traditions call home to serpent power, ancient Rome called “the holy bone.” Neither drew this from the Hebrew word or from Scripture.
Pneuma (πνεῦμα)
Greek — “breath, wind, spirit”
Used 379 times in the New Testament. Hagios Pneuma = Holy Spirit. Unlike kundalini energy, pneuma describes a Person — not an impersonal life force — who speaks, grieves, gives gifts, and intercedes with groaning too deep for words (Romans 8:26). The Holy Ghost does not coil at the base of the spine. He fills the human being from the inside out, at God’s initiation, pointing always to Lord Jesus Christ.

A Real Moment
I’ve sat with people who came to faith after years of deep kundalini yoga practice — including one man who experienced a full kundalini awakening, spontaneous and unplanned, after years of committed practice. When he became a Christian in his 30s, his question wasn’t theoretical: “Was any of that God? Do I have to renounce all of it?” The wisest pastoral answer I’ve seen someone give him was this: renounce the spiritual framework — the submission to kundalini shakti as a guide — but don’t pretend your experiences weren’t real, and don’t assume God can’t have been working even in the middle of your searching. That answer is consistent with 1 John 4: test what you experienced against Scripture, not yourself as a person.
The Catholic Spiritual Director Who Experienced Both
In 1991, a Catholic spiritual director named Philip St. Romain published the most honest Christian treatment of this question that exists: Kundalini Energy and Christian Spirituality (Crossroad Publishing). It remains essential reading for anyone wrestling seriously with kundalini in the Bible context.
Here’s what makes St. Romain’s account different from every other Christian book on the subject: he wasn’t practicing kundalini yoga. He was practicing deep Christian contemplative prayer — entirely within a Catholic devotional context — when he began experiencing spontaneous energy rising from the base of his spine, involuntary physical movements, and altered states of consciousness. His descriptions match kundalini awakening almost exactly. This happened without him ever seeking it.
St. Romain didn’t dismiss the experiences as demonic. He didn’t celebrate them as Hindu confirmation. He went to a spiritual director, worked through the experiences carefully against Christian doctrine, and wrote a measured, honest book about the entire process.
His main conclusion matters for this discussion: the physiological phenomena of kundalini awakening may reflect the body’s nervous system responding to deep meditative states — not necessarily a supernatural event in either direction. The important question for a Christian isn’t “is this kundalini?” — it’s “where is my attention pointed, and what fruit is this producing over time?”
St. Romain maintained his Catholic Christian faith throughout. He didn’t endorse kundalini practice. However, his framework offers something more honest than panic or dismissal: a way to distinguish the physical experience from its spiritual context, and to evaluate the latter against Scripture.
Philip St. Romain’s work is one reason why Christian mystics have engaged with Eastern traditions carefully rather than dismissively. The experience is real. The question of its source is what the Bible asks us to examine.
The Bethel Church Kundalini Controversy Explained
This question comes up constantly in charismatic circles — so it deserves a direct answer.
Critics — most prominently former charismatic pastor Andrew Strom, who wrote extensively on this — have argued that certain physical manifestations at Bethel Church in Redding, California and similar charismatic settings (uncontrollable shaking, “fire tunnels,” spontaneous laughter, people falling) resemble kundalini manifestations more than biblical Holy Ghost manifestations. Strom’s documentation includes side-by-side comparisons of kundalini yoga gatherings and certain charismatic meetings that are genuinely difficult to distinguish visually.
Bethel Church and its leaders, including Bill Johnson, reject this characterization entirely and maintain these are genuine moves of the Holy Spirit.
Both sides cite Scripture. So what do you do with that?
Apply 1 John 4 directly. The physical manifestation itself — shaking, falling, laughter — is not the test. The tests are: does it acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord? Does it produce lasting, Christlike fruit in the lives of the people experiencing it? Does it lead to greater submission to Scripture or away from it? Those questions belong to you to investigate honestly. The Bible doesn’t give you permission to outsource your discernment to critics or defenders on either side.
This is also a good illustration of why kundalini in the Bible discussions matter in the church today — not just in individual spiritual histories, but in evaluating spiritual movements more broadly. The same tools apply.
What the Bible Does NOT Say About Kundalini
A lot of what circulates online overstates the case in both directions. Here’s what the Bible actually doesn’t say:
NOT: Every Physical Sensation During Prayer Is the Kundalini Spirit
The Holy Spirit can and does produce physical responses — tongues of fire, trembling, falling prostrate, speaking in tongues. Philip St. Romain’s experience confirms that physical kundalini-like sensations can occur during sincere Christian prayer. The Bible never equates physical intensity with demonic activity. The test is always fruit and direction, not whether your body moved.
NOT: Yoga Poses Are Spiritually Dangerous by Themselves
Physical postures don’t open spiritual portals. The spiritual framework — deliberately submitting your spirit to kundalini energy as a guide, or to Yogi Bhajan’s system as a spiritual authority — is what Scripture addresses. There’s a meaningful difference between stretching and intentionally inviting a spiritual force built on the serpent power image into your spiritual life.
NOT: You Are Spiritually Ruined If You Practiced Kundalini
First John 1:9 is clear: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to purify us from all unrighteousness.” The divine grace that covers every other spiritual detour covers this one. This is not a special category of sin beyond God’s reach.
NOT: All Kundalini Experiences Are Automatically Demonic
The Bible doesn’t make this blanket claim, and intellectual honesty requires that we don’t either. What it does say is that spirits must be tested, that the spiritual realm is real, that evil spirits and unclean spirits exist, and that experiences which point away from Lord Jesus Christ warrant serious scrutiny. Apply the 1 John 4 test. Don’t outsource your discernment to fear.
I Already Went Deep — Now What?
If you practiced kundalini yoga seriously, had a kundalini awakening, or organized your spiritual life around kundalini energy — and you’re now coming to faith or re-examining it — here’s what Scripture actually asks of you.
First, pray 1 John 4:1 as a genuine question to God: “Holy Spirit, where did those experiences come from? Show me what was of You and what wasn’t.” He is faithful to answer that prayer. You don’t have to figure this out by yourself.
Second, renounce the spiritual framework specifically. Not necessarily the physical exercises — but the act of submitting your spirit to kundalini shakti as a guide, or to Yogi Bhajan’s path as a spiritual authority. Name it. Verbally renounce it. Invite the Holy Ghost to fill what was there. First Corinthians 10:21 is the frame: “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too.” Not because yoga poses are cups of demons — but because spiritual submission to a system built on the serpent power image and the kingdom of self is incompatible with Christ’s kingdom.
Third, don’t process this alone. These questions about spiritual history come up in many forms — in interfaith relationships, in people returning from Eastern traditions, in people who’ve had spiritual experiences they couldn’t explain. The pastoral principles are similar: honest examination, not condemnation. A wise pastor or spiritual director can walk through this with you far better than an article can.
Fourth, pursue the fruit of the Spirit actively. Water what’s growing, not what you’re walking away from. If love, joy, and peace are increasing — those are signs you’re pointed in the right direction.

These are different spiritual realities, not different names for the same one.
What does the baptism of the Holy Spirit have to do with kundalini?
Some writers — particularly in new age and spiritual syncretism circles — have tried to map the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2; John 7:37–39) onto the kundalini awakening framework, suggesting both are descriptions of the same spiritual energy. This comparison fails the 1 John 4 test immediately. The baptism of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament is given by Jesus (John 1:33), points to Lord Jesus Christ, produces the fruit of the Spirit, and is entirely outside human control or technique. Kundalini is self-initiated and points toward the self. The surface similarity — spiritual energy, physical manifestations — does not make them the same thing.
Can a Christian experience kundalini awakening?
Christians who practice yoga — particularly kundalini yoga — sometimes report experiences that match kundalini awakening descriptions. Philip St. Romain’s account suggests these physiological phenomena can occur in Christian contemplative contexts without being demonic or Hindu in nature. However, deliberately practicing kundalini yoga as a spiritual path — submitting your spirit to its framework — involves a spiritual submission that Scripture addresses in 1 Corinthians 10:21. Kundalini in the Bible is not a phrase you’ll find anywhere in Scripture. But the questions it raises — how do I test a spiritual experience? how do I know what’s from God? — are among the most important any believer can ask.
The Bible’s answer isn’t fear. It’s discernment. Test the spirits. Look at the fruit. Ask who it points to. If you’ve been somewhere you’re not certain about, 1 John 1:9 still stands: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to purify us from all unrighteousness.”
God is not afraid of your questions about kundalini. He’s been answering them since John put pen to papyrus. Bring them to Him.

I just read your article on the Kundalini Spirit in the Bible, and as a born-again believer in reference to Ezekial 33, James 5:19, and Galatians 2, I have to warn you that believing that the Kundalini Spirit and Eastern Philosophy is NOT compatible with the Bible is not only blasphemous but will damn people to hell. I say this in love and in prayer for repentance on the part of the writers and runners of the article and website. Ephesians 5:11 says to expose darkness and take no part in it. Biblically we cannot fellowship with false and demonic religions and occult, esoteric practices. They are not only contrary to the Word of God but are outright demonic. 2 Cor 6. I say this in love and if you have any questions or would like to know biblically why these practices are forbidden biblically, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Kundalini is just another name for a kind of spiritual awakening. The yogis of India named it first housands of years ago, but it is the same thing as the Holy Ghost within. It is Spirit Fire. Originally it comes from yogic science & philosophy not Hinduism. People worldwide have experienced this throughout history. It is not limited to only India folks.
A true believer of Christ was never possessed by demons in the Bible only nonbelievers were. No demon can enter a sacred body temple of God where the Holy Spirit dwells. I had a spontaneous spiritual awakening in one night similiar to Kundalini but different as it started at the top of the crown of my head to my pineal gland/inner temple spirit eye. I felt a featherlike spirit hand move through my crown one night when in deep despair praying to God. Moments later I felt a cool gust of air by my sacrum move over a chakra/inner temple energy. The word chakra just means disc or wheel. How did I feel what’s not physical? Just mindblowing… I had 12 knowings & 3 visions at my heart, mind & crown of my head. I had never even heard that word Kundalini before (living in a small town in south Mississippi may be why.) I had the mind of Christ (Christ consciousness) in sacred union with God, the Almighty (God consciousness). God, the Most High, loves us all so much & every one of us on earth are God’s children. I have never felt so much love, joy, happiness & profound understanding! I just knew not to struggle or be afraid but surrender. People that fight against God’s Holy Spirit have bad experiences struggling against Divine Energy. Also they give this kind of spiritual awakening a bad name. At my pineal gland, I felt my soul in this body temple light up & then I just KNEW (Gnosis) that the cool gust of air within was Divine Energy/ HolyGust/ Ghost/Holy Spirit.
Fastforward 2-3 yrs later & I stumble upon the KJV of Matthew 6:22 “The eye is the light of the body, if therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” EXACTLY what happened to me when the cool gust of air within reached my crystal laden pineal gland !!! Which is the inner temple spirit eye Jesus himself tells us about as “thine eye that be single.” Newer Bibles have changed the word eye to eyes. There is a lot esoteric knowledge within the Holy Bible if one has the eyes to see. Even Jesus spoke in paraboles to the crowd of people always & to his disciples he revealed the mysteries of God (within, no doubt.) Paraboles that are layered with deeper meanings if one has ears to hear & understand. God absolutely wants us to seek him. You see, since the Holy Spirit awakened me 7 almost 8 yrs ago, the Holy Spirit of God within has been searching… “the spirit searches for all things.. even the deep things of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:10

I agree, Frank. George has been deceived and is ignorant to the supernatural realm, trying to equate the demonic kundalini spirit with the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ. He is mixing Christ with Belial. He is substituting the work of the kundulini spirit with what the Holy Spirit wants to do in the believer. It’s actually blasphemy. Names are important… Jesus’ Name is far above the name of any other. “There is salvation in no other Name.” ” Salvation belongs to the Lord.”
It is not demonic at all. People who got frightened & struggled against this divine energy during this kind of spiritual awakening have given it a bad name. It is the Holy Spirit of God, the Almighty bc I have experienced a spontaneous spiritual awakeningin one night very similiar to a kundalini awakening. People fear what they do not understand. It is just a kind of spiritual awakening that yogic science & philosophy named Kundalini thousands of years ago & this was before Hinduism adopted it. Its origin is not Hinduism but from yogic science & philosophy. People all over the world have had this kind of spiritual awakening. Are we not all human within our body temples? I had a spontaneous spiritual awakening in one night & I had never heard the word Kundalini before. I felt a cool gust of air move over a chakra by my sacrum. Chakra???? I was mindblown. How did I know it was a chakra (wheel of inner temple energy). How’d I feel something not physical near where that cool gust of air had dwelt??? Back then chakras were colored circles I saw in a body illustration on Facebook. I never even gave them a thought. People are taught to fear this spiritual awakening bc people fear what they do not understand & blindly believe what others “in authority ” tell them without question. Much like the church that formed in the 3rd century that taught people that they needed a priest or clergyman to talk to & have a relationship with God. That is a lie. That The Kingdom of God is within…. God is within. We are the children of the Living Father.
This divine energy is the Holy Spirit within. Who is called different names in different cultures since the dawn of civilization . I just read your article on the Kundalini Spirit in the Bible, and as a born-again believer in reference to Ezekial 33, James 5:19, and Galatians 2, I have to warn you that believing that the Kundalini Spirit and Eastern Philosophy is NOT compatible with the Bible is not only blasphemous but will damn people to hell. I say this in love and in prayer for repentance on the part of the writers and runners of the article and website. Ephesians 5:11 says to expose darkness and take no part in it. Biblically we cannot fellowship with false and demonic religions and occult, esoteric practices. They are not only contrary to the Word of God but are outright demonic. 2 Cor 6. I say this in love and if you have any questions or would like to know biblically why these practices are forbidden biblically, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I pray for God to open your eyes and for repentance from these Occult teachings.

Kundalini is just another name for a kind of spiritual awakening. The yogis of India named it first housands of years ago, but it is the same thing as the Holy Ghost within. It is Spirit Fire. Originally it comes from yogic science & philosophy not Hinduism. People worldwide have experienced this throughout history. It is not limited to only India folks.
A true believer of Christ was never possessed by demons in the Bible only nonbelievers were. No demon can enter a sacred body temple of God where the Holy Spirit dwells. I had a spontaneous spiritual awakening in one night similiar to Kundalini but different as it started at the top of the crown of my head to my pineal gland/inner temple spirit eye. I felt a featherlike spirit hand move through my crown one night when in deep despair praying to God. Moments later I felt a cool gust of air by my sacrum move over a chakra/inner temple energy. The word chakra just means disc or wheel. How did I feel what’s not physical? Just mindblowing… I had 12 knowings & 3 visions at my heart, mind & crown of my head. I had never even heard that word Kundalini before (living in a small town in south Mississippi may be why.) I had the mind of Christ (Christ consciousness) in sacred union with God, the Almighty (God consciousness). God, the Most High, loves us all so much & every one of us on earth are God’s children. I have never felt so much love, joy, happiness & profound understanding! I just knew not to struggle or be afraid but surrender. People that fight against God’s Holy Spirit have bad experiences struggling against Divine Energy. Also they give this kind of spiritual awakening a bad name. At my pineal gland, I felt my soul in this body temple light up & then I just KNEW (Gnosis) that the cool gust of air within was Divine Energy/ HolyGust/ Ghost/Holy Spirit.
Fastforward 2-3 yrs later & I stumble upon the KJV of Matthew 6:22 “The eye is the light of the body, if therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” EXACTLY what happened to me when the cool gust of air within reached my crystal laden pineal gland !!! Which is the inner temple spirit eye Jesus himself tells us about as “thine eye that be single.” Newer Bibles have changed the word eye to eyes. There is a lot esoteric knowledge within the Holy Bible if one has the eyes to see. Even Jesus spoke in paraboles to the crowd of people always & to his disciples he revealed the mysteries of God (within, no doubt.) Paraboles that are layered with deeper meanings if one has ears to hear & understand. God absolutely wants us to seek him. You see, since the Holy Spirit awakened me 7 almost 8 yrs ago, the Holy Spirit of God within has been searching… “the spirit searches for all things.. even the deep things of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:10

I agree, Frank. George has been deceived and is ignorant to the supernatural realm, trying to equate the demonic kundalini spirit with the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ. He is mixing Christ with Belial. He is substituting the work of the kundulini spirit with what the Holy Spirit wants to do in the believer. It’s actually blasphemy. Names are important… Jesus’ Name is far above the name of any other. “There is salvation in no other Name.” ” Salvation belongs to the Lord.”
It is not demonic at all. People who got frightened & struggled against this divine energy during this kind of spiritual awakening have given it a bad name. It is the Holy Spirit of God, the Almighty bc I have experienced a spontaneous spiritual awakeningin one night very similiar to a kundalini awakening. People fear what they do not understand. It is just a kind of spiritual awakening that yogic science & philosophy named Kundalini thousands of years ago & this was before Hinduism adopted it. People worldwide have had this experience throughout time as there many symbols for this kind of spiritual awakening (caduceus is the main symbol &oothers & in 1500-1800 Christian art before kundalini was known to Europe). No demons can possess a believer of Christ or where the Holy Spirit of God dwells within.

Its origin is not Hinduism but from yogic science & philosophy. People all over the world have had this kind of spiritual awakening. Are we not all human within our body temples? I had a spontaneous spiritual awakening in one night & I had never heard the word Kundalini before. I felt a cool gust of air move over a chakra by my sacrum. Chakra???? I was mindblown. How did I know it was a chakra (wheel of inner temple energy). How’d I feel something not physical near where that cool gust of air had dwelt??? Back then chakras were colored circles I saw in a body illustration on Facebook. I never even gave them a thought. People are taught to fear this spiritual awakening bc people fear what they do not understand & blindly believe what others “in authority ” tell them without question. Much like the church that formed in the 3rd century that taught people that they needed a priest or clergyman to talk to & have a relationship with God. That is a lie.
