What Are Fathers’ Responsibilities in the Bible?

Whether biological or adoptive, fathers have certain duties to perform in the lives of their children according to God’s command. What are fathers’ responsibilities in the Bible? We’ll provide answers to this question in this article, using biblical stories and references.

If fathers play their roles effectively, they’ll raise responsible children who don’t cause problems for themselves and society.

However, one of the major challenges most men face is that they don’t know what it takes to be a father. And so, they continue to bring up children the same way they were brought up by their fathers, which may be faulty in many ways. As a result, the cycle of unhealthy traits and behaviors will continue from generation to generation.

7 Key Responsibilities of Fathers in the Bible

Although a father’s role in the lives of his children is numerous, we’ll discuss the 7 most important ones.

1. Train Your Children

Christian fathers have the obligation to train their children in the way of the Lord because they’re their first teachers. If you neglect this important duty, strangers will do it, and you won’t be happy with the outcome.

Children grow up quickly, and they learn almost all of their behaviors from their parents. That’s why the Bible says in Proverbs 22:6 that, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” This verse of the scriptures implies that the paths you direct your children onto are where they’ll go, whether they are right or wrong. Because you’re followers of Christ, you must teach your children the fear of the Lord at a young age.

Despite being a priest, Eli did not raise his children in a way that pleased God. Even when the Lord called his attention to the poor handling of his children, Propher Eli did not make any meaningful move to right his wrongs. As a result, he and his family members suffered the consequences of their actions. (1 Samuel 2,3 and ).

People of the world can raise their children anyway they want, but as children of God, you can’t afford to make this mistake because you know better. Therefore, train your children well, and they’ll give you peace until old age.

2. Provide for Your Children

Another important role of a father is provision for his children. This is one of the reasons a father’s job must be enough to cater for his needs and that of his family.

In the book of Genesis 2, God put Adam in the garden of Eden to work it and care for it before creating Eve for him.  So it is important for a man to have a job before planning to get married.

In modern society, many men are constantly embracing the idea of becoming stay-at-home dads, while their wives go out to work to provide for them and the children. But the word of God says in 1 Timothy 5:8: “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

Being a father of godly children requires taking up the responsibility of provision. Right from infancy to adulthood, the needs of children are countless. It is the sole responsibility of a father to ensure that his children eat good food, wear good clothes, live in a comfortable environment, and have quality education.

Children who don’t have parental support often engage in different illegal activities to make ends meet. Although providing for your family may not be convenient sometimes, it is one of the simple ways to make a child have a good life.

3. Protect Them

One of the main characteristics of a good father is the ability to protect his children physically and spiritually. Children are vulnerable, and so they need someone to depend on in times of trouble.

By God’s design, most men are physically stronger than women. Additionally, men have the natural ability to protect those who are precious to them, including their kids. It’s no wonder why fathers are obligated to keep their family members safe according to God’s word.

In the book of Matthew 2:13, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph, the foster father of Jesus Christ, and instructed him to “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt.” He further said  they should remain there because Herod’s plan was to kill the son of God. As a godly father, you can’t afford to take the safety of your children with levity.

Physical protection can be as simple as living in a safe neighborhood, investing in home security gadgets, and monitoring your kids’ movements.

Likewise, you must protect your children spiritually because we live in a wicked world where the evil ones continually wage war against the followers of Christ. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Because of this, you must always spend quality time in the presence of God, praying for divine protection upon the lives of your family members.

Just as the heavenly father protects his children, a human father must keep his children safe from all forms of danger.

4. Discipline Them With Love

Fathers must ensure that they discipline their children when necessary, but it must be from a place of love and not out of anger.

Several bible verses stress the need to discipline a child when they do wrong. They include Proverbs 22:15: “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.” Furthermore, Hebrews 12:4-12 speaks of discipline as one of the ways God expresses His unconditional love for His children. Similarly, a father’s love for his children is expressed when he practices biblical discipline.

Although most children don’t like it when their fathers punish them for wrongdoing, that’s not important. The most important thing is for fathers to instill discipline in their kids and to control their emotions at all times.

In the book of 1 Kings 1, we can see the story of Adonijah, who set himself up as king while his father King David was still alive. 1 Kings 1:6 reveals to us that his father the king never rebuked him for once about his bad behaviors, which probably made him rebellious. The lesson from this biblical story is still relevant today, considering the rate at which many fathers delegate the role of discipline to outsiders.

Most times, children love doing things their own way instead of following their father’s instruction. Regardless, a godly father’s responsibilities involve making sure that his kid’s behavior is in line with the ways of the Lord.

Fathers who refuse to take this important duty seriously always end up raising rebellious and troublesome children.

5. Never Provoke Your Children

Apostle Paul commands fathers not to provoke their children in the book of Ephesians 6:4. It says, “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Similarly, Colossians 3:21 says, “Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.”

It’s strange and funny how some parents believe they can’t do wrong in the eyes of their children. Some fathers don’t apologize to their kids when they offend them because they feel it’s demeaning to do such a thing.

Fathers play a vital role in their children’s lives, and so they must be careful with the way they relate to them. A good dad knows that his child’s life is more important than anything else in the world.

And as he’s trying to do a good work by raising godly children, he must not engage in anything that contradicts the word of truth.

Provocation can come in several ways that some dads may not pay attention to until it becomes a serious problem in their children’s lives. While some children would let go of their parents’ offenses, others would use it against them for many years.

Here are some of the most common ways many fathers provoke their children to anger:

  • Refusing to provide for their children

  • Speaking harshly to them

  • Punishing their children for every mistakes

  • Comparing their children to other children

  • Not expressing appreciation to them

  • Pressuring their children to do things that are not convenient

  • Constantly failing their promises to their children

  • Embarrasing their children with their words and actions

  • Loving a child more than their siblings

  • Delegating the role of discipline to their children’s teachers and guardians

6. Lead Them Properly

1 Corinthians 11:3 makes it clear that fathers are the leaders of their homes. It says, “But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.”

Children often follow in the footsteps of their parents, and so it is important for Christian fathers to be good role models for them. As the physical and spiritual leader of your home, it is what you give that you’ll get. If you want your sons and daughters to be trustworthy, don’t lie or fail your promises to them.

Additionally, if you desire your kids to have a good relationship with Christ Jesus, don’t neglect prayer time, bible study, and church attendance. It’s more effective to practice what you want your kids to do than to keep instructing them on what to do.

Be the kind of leader that your children would willingly follow, not the kind who uses emotional blackmail, force, or punishments to make them do his wishes. Also determine to guide your family on the paths of righteousness by being fully committed to the things of God.

Like Joshua, continually declare that “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15).

7. Demonstrate God’s Love

As followers of Christ, practice the pure, unconditional love of God when raising your children. Although parenting can be an enjoyable experience, it can also be challenging.

Children display different kinds of behaviors, especially during their teenage years, that can be frustrating and annoying. Still, you must continually show them kindness and forgiveness and always extend grace to them.

In Luke 15:11–32, Jesus tells the story of the prodigal son who took his share of his father’s inheritance and traveled to a far country to waste it. Realizing that he made the wrong decision, the prodigal son went back home to his father, who received him with open arms.

Children would always exhibit childish behaviors, but it is the responsibility of fathers to call them to order with love.

Demonstrate godly love to your kids by spending quality time with them, encouraging and supporting them, and guarding them on the right paths.

Final Thoughts

Raising children can be overwhelming for parents who want to do it right. Fortunately, fathers can learn their parenting responsibilities by reading the Bible regularly and following God’s commands.

Moreover, they can always ask the Lord for the divine wisdom, knowledge, and understanding required to raise godly children. Fathers who don’t take their God-given roles seriously often raise irresponsible children who cause problems in society.
