There are two main types of wisdom as described in the Bible: godly wisdom and worldly wisdom. Let’s discuss these two types of wisdom.
Godly Wisdom
As its name suggests, godly wisdom is the wisdom that comes from God. Other names for godly wisdom include divine wisdom, heavenly wisdom, and biblical wisdom. It is first pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, good fruit, impartial, and sincere (James 3:17).

Our heavenly Father is the ultimate source of wisdom who gives liberally to whoever desires it. All we have to do to obtain this kind of wisdom is to ask, according to James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” This verse of the Bible implies that the way to get wisdom is to fear the Lord God Almighty.
Having the fear of God in one’s heart can be as simple as acknowledging God’s existence, reading God’s word, and obeying His commands. By doing this, we will begin to make wise decisions because of our desire to please God (Psalm 119:99-100).
Godly wisdom is important in the lives of all believers in Christ. This is one of the reasons the Bible emphasizes the need to get wisdom more than anything else (Proverbs 4:7). It’s easy to identify wise people through their speech, conduct, and problem-solving skills. They’re special because the spirit of God dwells in their hearts.
Contrary to godly wisdom, worldly wisdom is the wisdom that comes from man. It is also known as human wisdom or earthly wisdom. Such wisdom stems from jealousy and selfish ambition, and it is earthly, demonic, and unspiritual (James 3:15).
Worldly wisdom negates everything the word of the Lord stands for because it deals with human emotions and common sense. And anyone who wants to have a close walk with God must not try to rationalize His word.
While the Bible says, “Give, and it shall be given to you…(Luke 6:38), the wisdom of the world says, “Giving reduces one’s resources.” While the scripture says, “Show respect for all people” (1 Peter 2:17), earthly wisdom says, “Respect is reciprocal,” and so on.
Apostle Paul makes us understand in 1 Corinthians 3:19-20 that “the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness. And again, The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise; he knows they are worthless.”
Therefore, believers must hold on to their Christian belief because there are many misleading ideas in the world today. Though these ideas may appear reasonable and godly, they have no biblical basis, which makes them dangerous. The wisdom of God is the only true wisdom that a serious Christian should endeavor to get.
There are several examples of wisdom in the Bible, but we’ll discuss 5 of the most powerful of them.
1. The Wisdom of Solomon
King Solomon’s wisdom is one of the most famous examples of wisdom in the Bible. He is the son of King David and is considered the wisest man in the world. It’s not surprising because Solomon received the gift of wisdom directly from God.
In 1 Kings 3:4-15, the Bible tells us that Solomon offered one thousand burnt offerings to God. And in return, the Lord told him in a dream to make a request. So Solomon asked the Lord for wisdom, and the Lord granted his request.
Solomon’s judgment of the case in 1 Kings 3:16-28 reveals he was indeed a wise man. In this story, two women claim to own a living child after one of them lost her child. After some back and forth, the king asked for a sword to cut the living child into two so that the two women could get half of the body each.
The mother of the living child agreed to leave the child with the other woman. But the other woman agreed with the king to kill the child. Knowing full well that a mother would not allow anything to harm her child, Solomon asked the first woman to go with the living child. By the time the people of Israel heard the king’s judgment about the two women’s case, they testified that his wisdom was from God.
Solomon’s wisdom is also evident in the books of the Bible he wrote, including the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.
Joseph, the favorite son of Jacob, was also endowed with the spirit of wisdom. His story can be found in the books of Genesis, Chapters 37 to 50. Joseph went through lots of struggles because of the fear of God in his heart.
First, Joseph’s brothers conspired to kill him out of envy but eventually sold him into slavery. When Joseph thought his struggles were over, Potiphar sent him to prison based on his wife’s false accusations. Still, Joseph did not depend on his own understanding but instead continued to rely on God’s guidance.
Right from the time Joseph was in the prison, he began to interpret dreams for the other inmates. He interpreted the dreams of the king’s cupbearer and baker in the prison, and they came to pass.
When it was time for God to showcase Joseph, he gave him the wisdom to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams. Because of Joseph’s wise counsel regarding Pharaoh’s dreams, he earned the position of prime minister in the land of Egypt. Within a short period, Joseph the prisoner became a key member in the king’s palace because of the wisdom of God in him.
3. The Book of Proverbs
The book of Proverbs can be described as a collection of wise sayings. This book of the Bible was written by the wisest man in the world, King Solomon. Hence, it’s not a surprise that the entire book of Proverbs is full of divine teachings that can improve our personal lives.

4. The Wisdom of Daniel
Daniel is among the biblical figures who exhibited exceptional wisdom because God was with him. Despite being a captive in a strange land, Daniel did not forsake the laws of the Lord. As a result, the Lord gave him wisdom to excel more than his peers.
In Daniel 2, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had a disturbing dream that unsettled him. All the magicians, astrologers, and enchanters couldn’t tell the king the meaning of the dream. Even the astrologers confessed to King Nebuchadnezzar that no one on earth could interpret the dream for him. But the Lord revealed the dream’s interpretation to Daniel in a vision, who in turn revealed it to the king.
Similarly, in Daniel 5, King Belshazzar saw a writing on the wall while having a banquet in his palace that made him so afraid. No man could read nor interpret the writings, except Daniel, because God was with him. Daniel’s exceptional wisdom is proof that God sets apart those who obey Him to do exploits.
5. Jesus’ Wisdom
The Bible makes us understand in 1 Corinthians 1:30 that Jesus Christ is the wisdom from God. All the teachings of Christ Jesus in the New Testament reveal that his wisdom is above human understanding.
Jesus’ judgment of the woman caught in adultery is a practical example of God’s wisdom (John 8:1-11). Likewise, Jesus’ response to the Pharisees about paying taxes is another perfect application of divine wisdom (Matthew 22:15-22). Additionally, the way Jesus handled the devil’s temptation after fasting for forty days and forty nights proves that his wisdom is from above (Luke 4:1-13).
The wisdom of Jesus Christ is available to anyone who accepts him as their personal Lord and Savior. But that’s not all; they must be willing to obey God’s commands and to follow the divine guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Christ is the perfect example of God’s wisdom in the Bible, and whoever follows His teachings will be wise.
