The Hebrew word most often translated as “peace” in the Old Testament is shalom (Hebrew root slm). Shalom means more than “peace” as we commonly use it. It also conveys completeness, wholeness of life, welfare, and harmony. It’s about everything being in its proper place, be it relationships, societies, and even one’s inner world.

This wasn’t just a wish for calm—it was a blessing of total well-being. It implied God’s presence, protection, and provision. God promised peace as part of His covenant with Israel:
Leviticus 26:6
I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid.
Peace was God’s gift to a people living under His rule, walking in His ways, and resting in His provision. It was a sign of God’s favor. When Israel turned from God, they lost their peace, not just militarily, but spiritually and socially.
In prophetic literature, peace is intricately tied to justice and righteousness. Isaiah writes:
Isaiah 32:17
And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.
Therefore, according to the theology of the Old Testament, peace is not possible apart from a right relationship with God and just dealings among people. Shalom touches every area of life. When God is rightly worshiped, when people live justly, and when communities care for one another, the peace of God flourishes.
Shalom is social, emotional, spiritual, and even ecological harmony. It is the world as it should be.
In the New Testament, peace is derived from the Greek word eirene. While similar in meaning to shalom, it emphasizes reconciliation and inner calm, especially through the person and work of Christ.
In the Roman world, eirene often meant political stability. But for the early Christians, peace was something far more profound.
Peace through Christ
God’s peace comes through Christ Jesus. The pursuit of peace translates to seeking Jesus, the Lord of peace, and being right with him. Consider what Apostle Paul writes:
Romans 5:1:
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Reconciliation with God is where the biblical definition of peace reaches its climax. Human beings’ deepest conflict is spiritual, i.e., alienation from Yahweh Shalom, the God of peace, not external. That broken relationship is restored through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility.
Christ not only reconciles us to God but also to one another. Jews and Gentiles, once separated, are now united in one body. In this way, Christ’s peace is vertical (love of God) and horizontal (human relationships).
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be calledWonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of a Messiah who would be called the Prince of Peace. Jesus fulfils this promise in a way no one expected. He didn’t overthrow Rome or bring political calm. Instead, He brought eternal peace through a cross.
The coming of our Lord Jesus Christ is hence the essence of spiritual peace.
Jesus, the source of peace, also encouraged his disciples with a message of peace.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 16:33
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.
The peace Jesus gives isn’t fragile. It doesn’t depend on politics, bank accounts, or perfect circumstances. It is rooted in His victory over sin and death. Even in the chaos of life, Christ offers a settled heart, anchored in eternity. This great peace produces joy.
